Thames High and the 48 Hour Film Competition – Golden Ratio is Back!

The Grate Hiest

Once again, Golden Ratio has participated in the 48 Hour Film Competition, a competition in which the title is pretty self-explanatory: 48 hours to make a 5-minute short film.

On 31st July, we grouped up in Thames High School (which was also to be our filming location) to find out our theme and four mandatory elements; we ended up with The Hacker/Heist Film with: an extreme close-up, an interruption, a rumour, and an illustration/portrait.

After getting all of our information as the costumes were being designed, our script writers spent all night brainstorming characters and putting together our script for ‘THE GRATE HIEST’.

The next morning we all got straight to work. We had 8am to 10pm to get all of our scenes done, so we began by getting our filming sets ready, costumes prepared and make-up done to prepare for a long day of filming.

Once everything was prepared, we began shooting. There were disagreements, laughs and arguments, with our cameraman constantly changing, but overall we finished right on time at 10pm.

This year we had one person on our post-production team, so on Sunday, all of the work went to Yuna – she worked hard to shorten the film to 5 minutes from about 13 minutes without muffing the script up and making the film totally confusing. I’m happy to say she succeeded. With some terrifying problems exporting the video, we ended up uploading the film just on time at 6pm!

I personally don’t mind if we don’t win anything. I found this experience even better than last year as we’ve all learnt from past mistakes and have greatly improved. This time I’m proud to say I was a part of Golden Ratio’s team this year! Despite a lot of us being busy with school work and extracurricular activities, I’m glad we all managed to group up again with some new faces this year.

I’d like to give a special thanks to Coromind for once again sponsoring us for the challenge; without them we wouldn’t have been able to participate. This time we’d love to try making an extended cut version for everyone to enjoy our original script. We’ll try to make sure you all see us again for the challenge next year!
