Discover Dive Zone Whitianga
One of Dive Zone Whitianga’s ex Diploma in Professional Scuba Instructor graduates, Freya, has plenty to say about her amazing world working in the dive industry.
“If you’d told me five years ago that doing my DIPSI with Dive Zone Whitianga would end up taking me to Antarctica, I would’ve laughed. After leaving school, I wasn’t really sure what to do, so I thought, why not give dive instructing a go? It turned out to be a pretty good decision.”

After graduating from the Dive Zone Whitianga PADI Dive Instructor course, Freya landed work in Northland and then scored her job with Aurora Expeditions as a dive and snorkel guide. For her, a typical day in Antarctica usually includes two main outings, plus a whole lot of sightseeing, education, and fun in between. One might be a landing, where guests explore penguin colonies or hike up to a viewpoint.

Another could be a zodiac cruise through the ice, spotting whales, seals or penguins, as well as guiding divers and snorkelers in the water of Antarctica. Yes, it’s cold – but it’s also unforgettable. Assisting with citizen science projects, from recording whale sightings to sampling phytoplankton, sparked her interest in marine science and she is now furthering her studies down the science pathway.
Dive Zone Whitianga offer a full range of dive courses, from PADI Open Water (learn to dive) through to PADI Specialty Instructor, and are New Zealand’s largest dive training facility.
The many offshore islands on our doorstep and hundreds of dive sites make this a world class destination for divers. Mercury Bay is abundant with flora and fauna, rocky reef systems, swim throughs and with our stunning coastline as your backdrop.
