Where’s ALTBAYS?

The Journey of Building a New Studio and Expanding Media Services

Since 2022, ALTBAYS Table Talk has been a staple podcast in the Coromandel, steadily growing its audience with engaging conversations. But over the last two months, the creators have been a bit quiet, leaving many to wonder: Where’s ALTBAYS?

As we reported in Coromind a couple of months ago, the ALTBAYS team is hard at work building a new studio in Whitianga. This will be their third location since they started livestreaming their shows, creating a cozy and safe space for guests from various backgrounds. Building a new studio takes time, but it’s also an opportunity for the team to reflect and plan the future direction of the platform. This new space will be a hub for innovation and quality content.

“Once you create something with quality, you can never go backwards,” says Leo Magri, host of the ALTBAYS Table Talk podcast. “We want to keep bringing more conversations to the table, but slightly shift them to a more educational realm. Of course, there will always be room for music, laid-back kōrero and laughs. But when we analyse our social media and see what topics our audience engages with the most, we realise that the better informed our guests are, the more people we reach. We’re contributing to an educated and evolving community.”

The ALTBAYS crew has produced 265 shows so far, giving them a deep understanding of the importance of networking. Each guest brings new opportunities and possibilities for collaborations. The team is also eager to get out of the studio and create new shows for their audience.

“We open our doors and do our best to make our guests feel comfortable. It’s no surprise that many of them are willing to give this positive energy back. We get invitations to visit their workspaces and communities where they’re thriving. We want to document that and share these stories of successful and interesting people with more Kiwis and people from around the world.”

Running a successful podcast takes a lot of work. It’s helpful to break it down into two parts: production and technical aspects.

The crew runs their shows with four cameras and four microphones, all connected to switchers and sound desks, creating a classic TV show experience. Three computers work simultaneously to ensure top-notch livestream quality, on-screen animations, and podcast streaming across different platforms. After the show, it’s uploaded to audio platforms, and the second phase begins: editing bits of the show to create clips and reels for social media. Phew!

The production team also works tirelessly to make the show happen: contacting guests, booking co-hosts, liaising with local businesses that support and sponsor the show, promoting online, studying the guests, and understanding the topics that will be discussed. It’s a full-time job!

“Podcasts are so popular nowadays, and with everyone having good quality microphones and cameras built into their phones, it seems like creating an engaging podcast is simple: just switch the mic on and start talking. Yes, you can do that, but turning it into a product that people are willing and interested in consuming involves a lot of work.”

The ALTBAYS platform is growing as more people reach out to the team for media support services. They offer a wide range of services, including social media management, digital marketing, video production, and of course, podcasting!

“When you understand the importance of cultural heritage and history, you realise how relevant it is to document things. We are prepared to help more people in the Coromandel community create their own podcasts, audiobooks, video courses, and much more.”

So if you’re interested in reaching more people with your brand or business, want to document something important for you and your family, or just want to have fun with your friends and start a YouTube channel or podcast, reach out to the ALTBAYS crew and they’ll help you get things moving.
