The National Success of Amplify Aotearoa

Coromandel Young Musicians Make Their Mark on the NZ Music Scene

On 23rd August, a group of young musicians from the Coromandel hit the road to play to a sold-out audience at the Clarence St Theatre in Kirikiriroa Hamilton, for the “Amplify Aotearoa – Take it to a Bridge” concert.

Put together by teacher Lachie Holt, Amplify Aotearoa pulls together a solid line up of Aotearoa NZ music legends to perform alongside rangatahi from all over the North Island.

Coromind magazine was stoked, back in March, to receive an invitation from Lachie to represent the Coromandel on the big stage this year.

“Gutter Black” was the iconic Hello Sailor tune our band was asked to rehearse. We were also stoked to hear that Harry Lyon and Stephen Small would be joining us on stage.

With musical direction from Stewart Pedley, our band was ready to rock Clarence St Theatre! We also had the opportunity to record the track at Dave Rhodes Productions studio in Whitianga.

Some of the NZ musicians who participated in this project were: Don McGlashan, Jordan Luck, Jason Kerrison, Jesse O’Brien, Andrew McClennan, Nathan King, Mike Chunn, Emlyn Crowther, Hollie Smith, and Lawrence Arabia.

A double-vinyl has been pressed and is for sale at JB Hi-Fi. By buying a copy, you are supporting a grassroots project that will allow Amplify Aotearoa to grow and reach more people in the upcoming years.

A huge thanks to the whole crew behind this amazing project. It’s awesome to see how much we can achieve when we come together as a creative community.

Also, a big shout-out to the The Coromind Band: Joseph May on bass, Zach Greenfield on drums, Riley Flynn on rhythm guitar, Cameron Johansen on vocals, Jade Kekesi on lead guitar, with backing vocals from Olivia Graham, Bonnie Roberts, and Wallace Roberts.

We’re already looking forward to being part of Amplify Aotearoa again next year!
