A celebration of Matariki through art and community
The upcoming Matariki public holiday weekend brings a deeply special opportunity for our community to gather, reflect, and look to the future. Running from 10th to 12th July, Te Toi o Matariki promises a beautiful weekend of connection, celebration, and creative expression across the Kūaotunu Reserve, Kūaotunu Hall, and surrounds.
The commemorations begin at the break of dawn on Friday, 10th July, with a traditional Hautapu ceremony at the Kūaotunu Reserve (opposite Luke’s Kitchen). Community members are invited to gather at 5:45 am for a prompt 6:00 am start. Following a warm mihi to whānau and the community, the Karakia o Matariki will commence, including the Waera to clear the space, and the moving calling of the names of loved ones who have passed during the Pohutakawa karakia. As the steam rises from the hot pot to symbolically warm the stars (Te whangai i ngā Whētu), subsequent karakia will follow, shared amongst local speakers.
The dawn ceremony will culminate in powerful performances of Haka and Waiata by the talented students of Te Rerenga School, followed by insightful kōrero about Matariki as the sun rises at 7:29 am, shared by kaumātua from Ngāti Hei and Ngāti Huarere.
The celebrations then move to the creative heart of the village. At 9:00 am, the Exhibition opening will take place at Kūaotunu Hall. This unique art show features stunning works by nine local artists, each tasked with creating an artwork inspired by one of the nine Matariki stars. The exhibition will run throughout the entire weekend.
Alongside the art, the hall’s garden will host a Wānanga from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, offering fascinating demonstrations of traditional crafts such as harakeke (flax weaving) and uku (clay work), alongside meaningful kōrero around kaitiakitanga (guardianship).
To wrap up an incredible opening day, the community is invited to gather around a bonfire at the Kūaotunu boat ramp from 6:00 pm. It is an all-welcome, family-friendly evening—so remember to bring your guitar and marshmallows for a cozy night under the stars.
Mark this beautiful weekend in your diary and join your community in celebrating the Māori New Year.
