Sitting in my home – nearly hidden in kānuka (white tea-tree) forest – above the stretch of sand and sea that is my tūrangawaewae (place to stand), Te Puia Pā (an ancient fortified village) is shrouded in mist. My mind takes me on a journey.

As you cross the ferry from Whitianga to the Cooks Beach side, a must-do track awaits you. This track is the start of two tracks: the Whitianga Rock and Pā Site track and the Maramaratotara Track (a loop).

In 2020 the HMS Buffalo Re-examination Project was created to complete the first ever detailed archaeological survey of the HMS Buffalo. The project was the recipient of the Australasian Institute of Maritime Archaeology (AIMA) Scholarship for 2021, and the funds were used to complete the survey in March 2021.
