Real Fun Hurts

Push Yourself, Play Hard

This article defines real fun.

Real fun brings out the best in you. It requires ongoing, regular, focused training and learning. It often means feeling stupid or frustrated –  and that’s normal. Real fun can push you to make healthier choices to perform better. It gives you a sense of purpose.

I was 21 when my mum died of cancer at forty-eight. The message was stark: grab life while you can. That means have fun, take risks, don’t wait, and be brave.

If you want to have more fun for a longer time, eat healthily and stay active.

If people are judging you – good. That means you’re out there doing something.

More people die from illnesses caused by sitting around judging others than from actually doing things. Sitting and judging causes disease.

What is real fun?

Real fun comes in many forms, and it often builds resilience. Try acting, golf, pole-dancing, learning a language, rock-climbing, playing the guitar, or sailing. Terror, humiliation, frustration, and pain can all be part of it.

Rollercoasters give you a quick buzz. But real, ongoing fun creates lasting resilience and growth.

This resilience will help when life goes way downhill – as all lives do at times.

You’ll bounce back faster and stronger.

In my rock climbing, I come away scratched, bruised, and sore.

I worry about getting hurt.

I almost give up on a regular basis – but I stick with it and figure it out. I’ve also learned that it’s okay not to figure it out that day. Real fun is a long-haul slog.

Fun isn’t just about pleasure. It’s about growth, resilience, and being brave enough to try.

Have real fun.
