Local Action – Tom Lamason (Basketball) – Brought to you by Harry and Her

Hi, my name is Tom Lamason. I am 15 years old and I have lived in Whitianga my whole life. I’ve just finished year 10 at Mercury Bay Area School. I’m involved in a lot of sports and activities like football, cricket, swimming, drums and being a lifeguard at Hot Water Beach.

For the past year, I’ve been fully involved in basketball and I’ve been really enjoying it. I started playing basketball at the end of year 9 with my friends during break times at school which has been great fun, excellent exercise and is a great way to hang out with my mates. I also really like watching basketball games on TV.

In year 10, I played in the Mercury Bay Junior Boys Development Team in the Thames Valley competition where we played on Sundays in either Te Aroha or Thames.

It involved a lot of travelling but it was a good way to talk to my teammates and get to know them better. I had a lot of fun playing in the team and we got coached by two really great guys, Cole and Charlie. Later on in the year I was asked to play in the MBAS Junior Boys Prem Team due to my defensive skills and my rebounding; we played in a tournament in Rotorua for three days. This was a really great experience where we had some really close wins against other schools. We also had a really good coach, Taimania; a big thank you to Leisa McCleery for supporting us and getting us to the tournament. I had a lot of fun being out there on the court.

After our season ended, I was asked to coach some younger students from school on a Wednesday afternoon. These students were in year 5/ 6 and year 7/8. I learned to coach and also how to referee a proper game.

Over summer, I will be playing basketball with my friends at the skatepark and I am hoping to improve a lot on my dribbling, shooting and my court vision. I will hopefully be playing in the Mercury Bay Senior Boys Team next year, which I am really looking forward to.
