Gaylene Lonergan – Featured Artist Issue 43

I have always been drawn to colour, creativity and the joy of telling stories through art. For many years, I have worked with silk as my canvas, using dyes and a liquid wax called gutta to create paintings that are vibrant, whimsical, and full of personality.

Painting on silk is both challenging and exciting.

It is an unpredictable medium that demands patience, confidence, and a willingness to embrace risk.

Every painting I create has a story behind it. My work is fun, light-hearted, and often inspired by the moments that make life special.

Living at beautiful Opito Bay provides endless inspiration.

Surrounded by stunning beaches and ever-changing coastal scenery, I am constantly reminded of the beauty that exists in the world around us. I also draw inspiration from my travels overseas and from the laughter and memories shared with family and friends. These experiences often find their way into my paintings, transformed into colourful and imaginative works of art.

I have always loved bright, bold colours and use them with wild abandon. Watching ideas emerge from my overactive imagination and evolve into something tangible, colourful and unique is one of the greatest joys of my life. I feel incredibly fortunate to spend my days doing something that I love so much.

The most rewarding part of being an artist is seeing the reaction my work creates. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than watching someone smile when they see one of my paintings.

Each year I hold a solo exhibition at Opito Bay on 3rd January and open my studio to visitors during the first two weekends of March as part of the Mercury Bay Art Escape. The rest of the year I am either travelling in search of inspiration or happily painting in my studio.

If one of my paintings puts a smile on someone’s face, my work is done.
