Melodies and chords have always resided in my musical heart. When I became an artist, I simply changed the keyboard for brushes.
Nick Fedaeff transitioned from the world of music to the field of visual arts, marking a notable shift in his creative journey. Prior to delving into visual arts, he captivated audiences as the frontman of a rock band and as a composer for various theatrical productions and films. When questioned about the source of his inspiration, Nick often responds with insight into his perpetual role as a composer. He explains, “Melodies and chords have always resided in my musical heart. When I became an artist, I simply changed the keyboard for brushes.”
His artistic style can be characterised as soft surrealism, with each painting able to be interpreted as a story. Yet admirers of his work often construct alternative interpretations of these narratives, a phenomenon that Nick warmly embraces. He remarks, “Creating a painting is a long process. It always becomes a part of me. Sometimes, the process consumes more than half a year, forging a profound connection. However, once it graces a gallery and becomes available for purchase, I feel like I’ve given birth to a baby. It was a part of my body, but it is no longer solely mine.”
Creating a painting is a long process. It always becomes a part of me. Sometimes, the process consumes more than half a year, forging a profound connection. However, once it graces a gallery and becomes available for purchase, I feel like I’ve given birth to a baby. It was a part of my body, but it is no longer solely mine.
The creative process is magic. For Nick, it’s also an addiction. He calls himself a ‘paintaholic’, because he draws or paints nearly every day. Alongside his artistic pursuits, Nick is a dedicated traveller. For the last 10 years, he has not lived anywhere permanently. His exhibitions span the globe, from the United States to Australia, New Zealand to South Asia, and Europe.
Accompanied by his wife, Nick resides in locales coinciding with his exhibitions. Among these destinations, Matarangi has held a special place in his heart since his discovery of the place in 1997. Matarangi has served as fertile ground for Nick’s artistic experiments and you can find Nick there when he is not overseas. Visitors have the opportunity to connect with Nick, explore his studio, and witness his latest creations before they find their homes in collections scattered around the world.
