Emma Evangeline Gustafson

Emma Evangeline Gustafson is a passionate painter, illustrator, and author based in Whitianga. Her intricate acrylic scenes draw deep inspiration from the Coromandel Peninsula’s stunning landscapes.

Emma aims to create artwork that is both healing and reflective of the interconnectedness and beauty of the natural world.

Ali Gustafson

Ali Gustafson is an artist and former graphic designer with a deep love for New Zealand’s beaches. After excelling in art during her school years, she spent decades in the print and advertising industry before discovering her passion for painting seascapes six years ago.

Inspired by the stunning beaches of the Coromandel Peninsula, Ali relocated to the region three years ago, where she now resides with her daughter, Emma.

Her artwork reflects the beauty and tranquillity of the coast, showcasing her strong connection to the landscape around her.

Sandy Gaskell

Ko Putauaki tōku maunga
Ko Tarawera tōku awa
Ko Matātua tōku waka
Ko Ngati Awa tōku iwi
Ko Sandy Gaskell tōku ingoa

I have lived in Whitianga for 47 years and co-own Fun Zone Adventure Park with my husband, Eric.

We have two children and three beautiful granddaughters. My great-grandfather settled in Whitianga in 1867, and my grandmother was born here in 1906. Whitianga is, and always has been, home.

My journey into the beautiful craft of te whatu kākahu (weaving) began about four years ago. This journey has taken me far beyond the art of weaving itself, for which I am forever grateful. I have primarily woven kahu huruhuru (feather cloaks), creating taonga (precious gifts) for friends and family. In addition to these, I have woven two art pieces that explore historical themes still impacting tangata whenua today. One of these, Mō Te Aroha Ki Te Whenua (For the Love of Land), featured in this exhibition, was a finalist in the Molly Morpeth Canaday Awards 2024.

Ashley Thor

My name is Ashley Thor, and I’m a ceramic artist. I honed my skills at Driving Creek Railway in Coromandel Town, where I developed a deeper connection to the art of ceramics. One of my proudest achievements is creating a giant chess set, which was acquired by the Waikato Museum.

Under the guidance of Barry Brickell, I learned to “listen” to the clay, understanding its texture and properties to bring out its potential.

After a long hiatus, I’m rediscovering my passion for ceramics and exploring new ways to express myself through this timeless medium.
