Aila Wills – Drawings

My name is Aila Wills. I’m 10 years old and I live in Whenuakite. I love to draw, paint, sing and dance. This summer I’ve drawn a collection of cards (my favorite is called cat, cat, cat, cat) which I’ve been selling at the Whiti Citi & Coroglen markets. My mum has a stall selling Carma Delights chutneys. I love to see other artists at the markets with their paintings and creations. I also like to go to music festivals to watch live performances and take singing lessons – I love to sing any song I know.

BOOK KEEPER by Mary Fox

find my book;

 in all its used & dirty glory…

joy of cooking.

hunt in every box;

 it’s in your old & grubby hands…

blow my cover.

finger the pages;

 its faded & worn edges…

you know it by heart.

choose what you fancy;

 it’s likely a complicated affair…

read between the lines.

The Old Man and the Mountain

The Old Man stared at the mountain

And a smile crept over his face

As his mind turned to thoughts of his heyday

How he’d put the big brute in its place

He had climbed many times to the summit

With the Westerly wild in his hair

And if anyone asked him the question

He’d say “because it was there”

Now old age had treated him kindly

And he kept his body in trim

With many an hour spent in walking

He was sound in his wind and his limb

He was always good for a challenge

To test out his strength with a pack

For the wind still carried the whisper

Of the mountain calling him back

He had beaten the bastard at 😯

By mounting the summit again

And basked in the limitless vista

As he sipped on a glass of champagne

But the mountain was seeking a vict’ry

To get the old man off his back

“l’ll meet you again when you’re 90

And then we will see what you lack”

The Old Man smiled in his daydream

How the challenge would give him a thrill

ln his mind he had already conquered

And that mountain was now just a hill

words by Chris Porter

Chris wrote this poem about his friend David Baker when he climbed Taranaki Mounga (Mount Taranaki) at the age of 80. David, now 90, recently returned from climbing the mountain again and used this climb to raise funds for Starship Children’s Hospital.
