Sandy Gaskell

I have lived in Whitianga for 47 years and co-own Fun Zone Adventure Park with my husband, Eric.

We have two children and three beautiful granddaughters. My great-grandfather settled in Whitianga in 1867, and my grandmother was born here in 1906. Whitianga is, and always has been, home.

My journey into the beautiful craft of te whatu kākahu (weaving) began about four years ago. This journey has taken me far beyond the art of weaving itself, for which I am forever grateful. I have primarily woven kahu huruhuru (feather cloaks), creating taonga (precious gifts) for friends and family. In addition to these, I have woven two art pieces that explore historical themes still impacting tangata whenua today. One of these, Mō Te Aroha Ki Te Whenua (For the Love of Land), featured in this exhibition, was a finalist in the Molly Morpeth Canaday Awards 2024.
