The Waihi Makers Among Us

Crafty Ladies Waihi & Happy Space Mosaics

Having a creative outlet is a powerful thing. It keeps us inspired, busy and connected. Some people create quietly in their own spaces, while others choose to share their creations with the world.

The talented locals featured here are doing exactly that. From textiles, pottery and hand-carved wood to mosaics, they are turning their ideas and passions into beautiful, unique creations.

Meet these creative community members, discover their stories and get inspired!

Crafty Ladies

Colleen Spinetto

I started the idea for Crafty Ladies Waihi as I saw a need for an outlet to show off the unique pieces crafted by these creative people. It’s a great opportunity for people to visit and see what’s on display!

I am passionate about recycling. The fun part of crafting is sourcing my materials and turning them from shells to treasures, or from nature to fabric.

Sue Hagen

I am always stitching, quilting or eco-printing on fabric. This is an interesting hobby that keeps growing, and I like to sell my work to afford new materials.

Eco-printing with leaves: This process gives environmentally friendly prints using the natural tannins of leaves. It is a sustainable craft using recycled fabrics. No powdered mordants (metal salts) are used to fix colours.

Among my products displayed at Crafty Ladies, you will find cushions, scarves and beautifully quilted handbags, all made using wool, silk and cotton.

Bernadette Heibner

I am a local potter who began to explore pottery in my retirement years. I have made a large range of unique creations, including wall hangings, planter bowls, flowers and a range of garden art, such as mushrooms, hedgehogs and native birds.

If you are looking for a Christmas gift with a difference, or a personal treat, come on down to check out the interesting items for sale. I appreciate the opportunity to display some of my pottery at Crafty Ladies Waihi.

Happy Space Mosaics

Sandra Watson

Around 20 years ago, I found a box of broken tiles and began experimenting with mosaics. It quickly evolved into a wonderful artistic journey, bringing recycled materials and reclaimed everyday objects together. This art form allows me to create a wide variety of pieces, from birdbaths and coasters to photo frames and plant pots. The possibilities are endless.

Sharing this craft with others opens up their creative paths and brings people together to share ideas and learn from each other. In our fast-paced world, workshops also offer a chance to step away from the ‘busyness’ of life, slow down and enjoy the company of others.

I love watching clients place their first piece of ceramic onto their chosen project and seeing their confidence grow as it takes shape. The final ‘reveal’ after grouting and cleaning is always a joy.

Creative spaces and local markets help us connect, create and support local artists. They are an integral part of a community.
