Ivan Anderson: Handcrafted Beauty
Ivan Anderson is a quiet artist and craftsman more comfortable with his chainsaw than promoting his work. As a fisherman with a local charter boat, woodworking was previously a long-time hobby when work permitted.
The advent of Covid, of necessity, led to a dramatic change in direction and focus for Ivan. Setting aside bait and hooks, he turned to his woodworking tools, producing extraordinary pieces of art from ‘found’ chunks of swamp, beach and river timber.
A visit to his storeroom left me in awe of the ten gleaming sculptures on display, coaxed from the rough into magical shapes and curves.
Standing between 130 and 170 cm in height, these striking pieces have been formed from both native and exotic timber, including pūriri, tōtara, kauri, English walnut, Tasmanian blackwood and American walnut.
The grain and texture of each type of wood has been transformed into fascinating sculptures, which remain intriguing when turned and viewed from every angle.
Despite their bulk and weight, each piece can be easily moved using the unique rotating bases that Ivan has created.
Each has its story, a riveting history of its provenance and formation.
