Community Support Sought for Mercury Bay Arts Hub

The Mercury Bay Arts Development Trust is seeking community support for its vision of a dedicated arts and creative hub for Te Whanganui o Hei / Mercury Bay and the wider Eastern Coromandel.

The project builds on the findings of the independent 2023 feasibility study, which confirmed strong demand for a flexible arts facility serving artists, performers, makers, schools, community groups and visitors.

Trustees recently met with Thames-Coromandel District Council representatives to discuss the next steps required to progress the proposal through upcoming Council planning processes.

The proposed hub would provide much-needed exhibition, workshop, performance and learning space while supporting community wellbeing, cultural expression and economic development.

Importantly, the facility would offer a low-impact, all-weather visitor attraction, helping diversify the region’s tourism offering and encouraging year-round visitation.

The Trust has launched a petition seeking public support for the project and is encouraging residents, artists, businesses and community organisations to get involved.

Chair, Jan Wright says the project reflects years of community discussion and planning.

“This is a long-term community project designed to create opportunities for creativity, connection and cultural expression for generations to come.”

The Trust welcomes enquiries from individuals and organisations interested in supporting the kaupapa.
