Stories That Matter

It is an interesting thing how we all feel a type of ownership over publications. I remember when working as a journalist for a community newspaper, people would always tell me how I should be covering such-and-such event, or that worthy cause, or those issues. And of course, more often than not, we were grateful for the tips. But as a readership, we can also tend to feel the right to expect things from a publication which may or may not be sustainable for the people behind the mechanism of operation.

In recent years many magazines and community newspapers have folded their pages for the last time and closed the doors. Metro magazine, which existed since the 1980s, is one of the most recent to depart from a printed format and exist only in the digital world.

The old model of free editorial content and paid advertising was no longer working for these businesses to remain afloat. The World Wide Web had swooped in and changed the landscape with its array of bloggers and digital news.

And with all this in mind I believe the team behind Coromind must be applauded and admired.

They have changed the model and as a result they are making it possible to provide a quality magazine that not only looks great and provides a wealth of interesting articles, but is free of charge.

More than that, Coromind exists not only in print but in a second-to-none digital format and, incredibly, makes all printed articles available in audio format. This extremely generous commitment to accessibility and inclusivity is commendable.

Diversification is also another key element to Coromind’s survival, the team behind the wheels are filming videos, recording podcasts, running workshops and pretty much putting their hand to anything that connects them to the people.

It is always a pleasure to read about the otherwise unsung cultural heroes, the creators, the conservationists, the movers and shakers that all add up, along with Coromind, to a healthy, thriving community.
