Mercury Bay Art Escape 2026: Celebrating 20 Years of Creative Brilliance

Two decades of artistic excellence

In 2026, the Mercury Bay Art Escape marks a remarkable milestone – our 20th anniversary. What began as a grassroots celebration of local creativity has grown into one of the Eastern Coromandel’s most anticipated arts events, showcasing over 50 exceptional artists from across the region.

The 2026 event honours two decades of artistic excellence and community connection with exciting new developments. A refreshed logo gives a contemporary look, and the Open Studios geographic area now includes artists from Pauanui. To give visitors more time to explore, the Open Studios will run Saturday, Sunday and Monday across both weekends – an invitation to linger, discover, and connect with your favourite artists.

A Rich Tapestry of Mediums

Expect to be captivated by an extraordinary diversity of work: oil painting, weaving, glasswork, iron sculpture, clay artistry, mosaic and photography.

Many artists are multi-disciplinary, blending techniques across painting, pottery, printmaking, mixed media, cold wax, and alcohol ink. Whether you’re drawn to bold abstraction or finely detailed realism, there’s something to stir every imagination.

To plan your visit, pick up a copy of our vibrant guide or explore the full programme online at www.mercurybayartescape.com. Many artists also welcome visitors by appointment throughout the year – details are available on the website.

Gala Opening at Hot Water Beach

The festivities begin with our much-anticipated Gala Opening, 6pm on Friday 6th March at Hot Waves Café, Hot Water Beach. This lively evening features music, delicious food and drink, and the chance to meet artists and view the showcase exhibition featuring one piece from each artist.

One of New Zealand’s most well-known and celebrated artists, Dick Frizzell, will be the keynote speaker. With a remarkable repertoire he has created some of our country’s most iconic art. Tapping the New Zealand psyche, he draws on our landscapes – Kiwiana, Māori art, abstract – and mixes high art with popular culture.

Tickets are available from Hot Waves Café or online at www.mercurybayartescape.com

We extend appreciation to our long-standing patrons, Michael Smither CNZM (Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit) and renowned Samoan artist Fatu Feu’u ONZM (Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit), whose support continues to inspire and elevate the artistic spirit of our region. We also extend our thanks to all our wonderful sponsors, please support them when you can.
