The Power of Perspective: How to Find the Bright Side in Any Situation

In the face of adversity, it’s important to stay strong and focus on what we can control.

Neil and Rowan make up a great team. Father and son are dedicated to a healthy and fulfilling life.

In October 2022, Neil discovered that his unexplained discomfort and lack of energy were more serious than he could imagine. Coughing a little blood was a sign that he should see a doctor. The news that Neil had lung cancer shook up things at the Pyne’s house, but instead of being defeated by it, the family trusted the stoic approach to life, and things became lighter.

Neil has done a lot in life: primary school teacher, sugar cane farmer, bridge constructor, part of the corporate world for more than 25 years and more recently, hairdresser and yoga instructor. Born in Christchurch and a travel enthusiast, Neil settled in the beautiful Kuaotunu, Coromandel, four years ago.

Neil’s son, Rowan is a dedicated sportsman. He plays underwater hockey and touch rugby, among many other modalities. Rowan loves anything related to mental and physical health. He battled addiction and understands the importance of talking about these issues, as many people suffer in silence.

Neil’s emphasis on accepting what we cannot change and finding strength in adversity resonated with Rowan.

The son focuses on supporting his father to get better, even if that means stopping him from having that little bit more ice cream that he loves so much!

Neil’s strength and resilience are an inspiration to all of us.
