Kia ora, I’m Shane – raised in Waihi Beach and currently residing in Wānaka. I have been a full time freelance visual artist since 2015.
My art practice is mainly self-taught, and multidisciplinary. It consists of a dedicated studio practice, painting murals and small amounts of design and illustration work. I have received multiple awards nationally and internationally for murals and now paint all around the country, participating in street art festivals and painting commissioned works.
Inspiration comes from all areas of life, my hobbies and interests, the outdoors, nature, culture and personalities. A strong Kiwiana focus is the most consistent theme although I’m not niche specific – which is probably unusual, but it keeps the fire burning for me and I like to stretch my capabilities and grow as an artist. It’s a lifestyle job for me and that’s what I try to portray in my works.
With my public works, I try to pump some positive vibes into the community, something to bring a smile and some joy into people’s day. A simple thing like art can have big effects on people’s well-being and if I can inspire or enhance someone’s day I feel I’m achieving what I’m setting out to do.
