The CoroCine Film Festival will for the first time bring together Coromandel films and filmmakers in an exciting programme over three days, in a collaboration between Creative Coromandel and Twin Cinemas Whitianga. CoroCine will also kick off the coromandel artbeat spring festival, a three-month online programme of creative events.
Mercury Bay Museum is on the lookout for a talented designer to create a new Museum Explorers badge in celebration of “Conservation Week” from 2nd to 8th September 2024. This is a fantastic opportunity for participants to have their artwork featured and distributed during Conservation Week.
For me, Matariki 2024 is about living by the words that Kīng Pōtatau Te Wherowhero Tūheitia Paki spoke at a national hui, held at Tūrangawaewae Marae on January 20th this year.
“Just be Māori … build kotahitanga (unity with others) … build our future … We are all in this together … the way forward needs to bring peace and unity for everybody. These issues (around the strategic erosion of Mana Tiriti by elements of our present government) are bigger than politics … it won’t be easy … there’s more mahi (work) to do.”
My contribution in this Matariki issue of Coromind is a karakia and an interpretation of its meaning in English.

Youth Rebellion and Musical Evolution
The first time I saw Flaxxies playing live, I was impressed by their musicianship, enthusiasm and stage presence.
After that show, we ended up at a cool party and bonded pretty quickly. I’m at least 10 years older than drummer Neo Lee, Eric Goodger lead guitar, Nick Tait rhythm guitar, Chris Manning bass/trumpet, and lead singer Benji Humphries, but they’re old souls with a great sense of humour, willing to understand the world around them by connecting with humans and showing interest in what they are up to.
