ALTBAYS.NZ –  The Niche of Not Having a Niche

The price of diversity online

In an era where digital platforms are saturated with content tailored to specific demographics and interests, carving out a unique niche can seem like the golden ticket to success. Based in Whitianga, on the Coromandel peninsula of Aotearoa New Zealand, the podcast ALTBAYS Table Talk has defied convention by embracing the niche of not having a niche.

At first glance, the concept may seem paradoxical. After all, how can a podcast thrive without targeting a specific audience or genre? The answer lies in the vision of its creators, Taylor O.G and Leo Magri, who saw an opportunity to foster genuine connections by transcending traditional boundaries.

“For us, it’s about bringing communities together, regardless of their backgrounds or beliefs,” explains Taylor O.G. “I don’t know of any other tool to fix prejudice and differences aside from a good conversation.”

With this guiding principle, ALTBAYS started to create content that resonates with a broad spectrum of listeners. Rather than putting themselves into a particular niche box, they embraced diversity, welcoming guests from all walks to chat.

“I’ve been calling Aotearoa New Zealand home for eleven years and have met incredible Kiwis and people from different countries, which has taught me a lot about how we all see the world differently. These encounters should make one less judgmental, so our goal with the podcast became to showcase the richness and complexity of the human experience,” says Leo Magri. “By featuring a diverse range of voices and perspectives, we aim to cultivate empathy and understanding among our audience.”

This commitment to inclusivity has been central to ALTBAYS’ success. Over the course of more than 260 episodes in two years, the podcast has nurtured a loyal following drawn to its authentic and eclectic content. From heartwarming anecdotes to thought-provoking discussions, each episode offers a glimpse into the mosaic of life in Aotearoa and beyond.

“We will engage in dialogue with anyone who is capable of conversation, as long as their ideology does not view others as inferior,” says Taylor O.G. “It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the connections that form when people from different backgrounds come together to share their stories.”

In today’s online world, where computer programs and groups of like-minded people dominate, ALTBAYS stands out as something different. Instead of focusing on just one topic, the podcast opens up room for chance meetings and surprising discoveries. It encourages listeners to explore new ideas and viewpoints that they might not have come across otherwise.

“Listening to ALTBAYS feels like stumbling upon a hidden gem,” remarks one local fan. “You never know what you’re going to get, but you can always count on it being authentic due to it being live streamed.”

Of course, navigating the niche of not having a niche comes with its own set of challenges. In an age where algorithms prioritise specialisation, reaching a broad audience can be daunting. Yet, for ALTBAYS, the rewards far outweigh the risks.

“We’ve had to get creative with our approach to marketing and outreach,” says Leo Magri. “But ultimately, our focus remains on creating meaningful conversations that resonate with people.”

ALTBAYS’ commitment to authenticity has been its greatest asset. By staying true to their vision and values, the podcast has cultivated a dedicated community of listeners who appreciate its unapologetic embrace of diversity.

“As someone who doesn’t fit neatly into any one category, ALTBAYS speaks to me on a deep level,” says another listener. “It’s a reminder that there’s beauty in complexity, and strength in embracing the full spectrum of human experience.”

The niche of not having a niche is more than just a marketing strategy, it shows the power of authenticity, empathy and connection in an increasingly fragmented world.

ALTBAYS defies categorisation and, in doing so, the team have reminded us all that sometimes the most meaningful connections are found when we venture outside the confines of our comfort zones.
