Featured Artist Issue 25 – Reina Cottier

New Eyes & New Visions for the Future

After my last child departed for tertiary study this year, it was time to focus on myself and tend to my own well-being. So after a year of ‘me’, and having some (not serious) surgeries and procedures, including eye surgery, I have emerged as ‘Reina 2.0’ lol! Thankfully, I have still been able to paint and host art workshops / retreats, in between said procedures, and I managed to complete four very large commissions this year.

One was for DOC (Dept of Conservation), a colourful fun piece which will be used for
promotions in schools and at events. Not only to raise awareness of our native forest, but predominantly the kauri tree and the effects of kauri dieback disease on this mighty tree.

The theme was:

“Just as kauri entwine with others to protect the health of the forest, we work together to protect our kauri lands for future generations. He waka eke noa – We are all in this together.”

Overall, my art continues to feature a blend of abstract and representational elements, often focusing on themes of nature and the human experience. I utilise vibrant colours and dynamic forms to evoke emotion and invite contemplation.

I love to explore the interconnectedness of life and the environment, which reflects my deep appreciation for organic shapes and natural sea/landscapes. I like to create dialogue between the viewer and the subject, encouraging a personal interpretation of the imagery offered.

Art Retreats and Workshops
In May I visited Bali, not only to see my oldest daughter, but to also go on a bit of a ‘reccy’ and see if hosting an art retreat in Bali would be something I would want to consider. Some beautiful venues, and lots to think about for, maybe, a 2026 retreat.

2025 is already feeling ‘full’, with my Italy Art Retreat in October 2025 (Creativity & Connection), and a huge trip planned after that. Lots of inspiration to be had for artworks in the future, of that I am sure! This retreat is booked out, but feel free to contact me to go on the waitlist.

I still regularly host Art Workshops and Retreats here on my Tairua property in my studio / gallery; we have a 2-bedroom self-contained unit onsite. I like small groups, usually 2-3 people max (my studio is little) for 2-5 days. Most guests come and spend a couple of extra days exploring the area and soaking up the magic of this part of the country.

My retreats are for all levels of creatives, whether a complete novice or a seasoned artist wanting some new ideas, a fun and relaxed connection with like minds.

I’m always happy to have a chat about it all if it’s something that interests you, or maybe as a gift for someone else?
