Known for her unique blend of country-tinged tunes and soul-stirring ballads, Kendall’s dynamic live performances captivate audiences, evoking a range of emotions from laughter to tears.

Her music style draws inspiration from the golden eras of the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s, and she has shared stages with notable artists such as Bic Runga, Tami Neilson, and Larkin Poe. Kendall’s debut album, Red Earth, and her latest release, Let the Night In, showcase her impressive vocal delivery and songwriting prowess, earning her numerous accolades and chart success.

Here, Kendall discusses her musical journey, the inspiration behind her songs, and her experiences as a musician in Te Tara-o-te-Ika-a-Māui. From her early passion for music, inspired by a special gift from her late father, to her aspiration of mastering the art of recording and mixing her music at home, Kendall Elise’s story is one of dedication and continuous growth.

How did you get started with music? Any fun stories from the beginning?
I’ve loved music from a very young age and my Mum says I was singing before I could talk.

At primary school, I remember sitting on the mat in Mrs Irvine’s class with her playing guitar and leading us all in singing The Carpenters – ‘Top Of The World’. I sang it at the top of my lungs – and a boy that I had a big crush on told me I sound like Alanis Morrisette. Still one of my career highlights to date.

One of my biggest moments was when I was around 13 and my Nana gifted me my late father’s guitar. He passed away before I was born and she had stored it away for safekeeping. Being given such a special gift really helped cement my passion for music, and to learn that it was a passion I shared with my father was even more special.

What gets your creative juices flowing? What inspires you to make music?
I’m inspired by finding a sense of moment in the everyday, the mundane – looking for the magic in the ordinary and writing about it. I also love to look back on experiences I have had where there were big emotions and try to understand them through song.

Who are your musical heroes or role models?
I’m a huge fan of Joni Mitchell, her impressive musicianship and her authenticity! But my biggest role model is my husband Chris – who has endlessly encouraged me to see what I am capable of musically. I am so proud of what I have been able to achieve with his support.

What’s been your most unforgettable moment in your music career so far?

Playing support for, and singing a song with, one of my biggest musical inspirations – Bic Runga.

How has live music shaped your life and career?
Performing is such a privilege; being able to share my music with people and have them connect with my songs in their own way is such a joy.

What does being a musician here in Te Tara-o-te-Ika-a-Māui (on the Peninsula) mean to you?
I feel so grateful to be able to create music in such a beautiful peaceful environment. There are endless opportunities for inspiration, whether it’s at one of the amazing local beaches or from going on a bush walk. I have seen some amazing local live shows and have loved being involved in bringing artists here to perform as well.

As an artist, creative well-being is so important. What does it mean to you as a musician, and how do you use it in your work?
Creative well-being to me is understanding what your limits are, and what things help keep you at the top of your game. Whether it’s making sure you are fed and watered before a show, staying away from alcohol – or making sure you set aside some time every week for your practice.

Any exciting plans or projects on the horizon?
I’m spending some time upskilling. As much of an honour as it is to be able to record in an amazing studio like Roundhead, I’d love to be able to record and mix my own music at home.

Where can we find your music, and how can people show their support?
Bandcamp is the best way – you can purchase vinyl or CD copies of my albums – or buy a digital copy. You can sign up to my mailing list on my website to hear about any shows and also follow me on YouTube!
